Privacy notice

What this site collects, why, who else handles it, and what you can do about it. Last updated 4 November 2026.

Who is responsible

Matthew Wheeler is responsible for the personal data collected through mattwheeler.co. I'm a freelance web developer based in the French Alps.

To contact me about your data, email me.

info@mattwheeler.co

If you use the contact form

  • I collect your name, email address and message, plus your company, budget and timeline if you give them
  • I use them to reply to you and talk about your project, and you get an automatic copy of your message by email
  • The legal basis is taking steps at your request before a possible contract
  • I keep enquiries for 3 years after we were last in touch, longer if we go on to work together and the law requires me to keep the records

If you accept analytics

  • Google Analytics records the pages you view, where you came from, your approximate location, your device and browser, and an identifier stored in a cookie
  • I use this only to count visits and see which pages are useful. I don't use it for advertising, and this site tells Google Analytics not to use it for ad personalisation. Google may also use analytics data to improve its own products and services, under its own terms
  • The legal basis is your consent. It stays off unless you accept, and you can withdraw at any time without affecting anything else on the site
  • Google says Google Analytics 4 doesn't log or store IP addresses. Analytics data is kept for up to 14 months

Your cookie choice

Analytics cookies are only set if you accept them. Rejecting them is as easy as accepting, and the site works the same either way.

Your choice is remembered for 6 months, then the banner asks again. You can change it at any time, here or from Cookie settings in the footer.

Cookies on this site

  • cc_cookie, set by this site: remembers your cookie choice. Strictly necessary. Lasts 6 months
  • _ga, set by Google Analytics only if you accept: tells one browser from another. Lasts 13 months
  • _ga_ followed by an id, set by Google Analytics only if you accept: keeps track of the current visit. Lasts 13 months
  • The contact form's security check is run by Cloudflare Turnstile, which may store short-lived data needed to tell people from bots

Who else handles your data

  • Cloudflare hosts and protects this site and runs the contact form's security check. It handles your IP address and technical request data to do this
  • Postmark sends the contact form's emails
  • Google provides Google Analytics, only if you accept
  • Google Workspace stores the messages I receive
  • I don't sell your data

Hosting, security and transfers

Delivering and protecting the site means Cloudflare has to handle technical data such as your IP address on every request, and logs are kept for a short time to fix faults and stop abuse. The legal basis is my legitimate interest in keeping the site working and secure.

Cloudflare, Postmark and Google may handle data outside the EU, including in the US. Where they do, the transfer relies on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct, delete or receive a copy of your data, limit how I use it, or object to it being used. You can withdraw consent at any time, and you can tell me what should happen to your data after your death.

Email me and I'll reply within a month. If you're not happy with the answer, you can complain to the CNIL, the French data protection authority, at cnil.fr, or to the authority where you live.
